- Harshit Shah Asst. Professor, N. R. Institute of Business Management, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

Abstract:

ICTs offer a potentially influential mechanism for promoting social and economic development. By virtue of new ICTs, there is immense opportunity for developing countries to exploit the power of ICTs so as to address development challenges more effectively. The ICT sector has got a key role to play as a significant driver of growth in the developing economies. Intellectual property rights (including copyrights, patents, trademarks and other informal tools) are widely recognized as a key driver of innovation in the ICT arena. ICT SMEs in the EU are very important for the dynamism and competitiveness of the European economy. IP-based New Technology Firms gather all their revenues from licenses and royalties of IP and use IPR broadly. For developing country firms like that in ASEAN countries, the impact of TRIPS takes place, at least conceptually, through multiple channels. BRIC countries, having accounted for 13% of global demand, with spending of about € 328 billion in ICT, are becoming major players, not just as plain ICT users / importers but also as producers of ICT goods and services. Indian patenting activity in the field of ICT has grown slowly since 1990 but went through "a sudden spurt in growth during 2002-2007". However, as compared to China, it remains modest in India and Brazil.
